Stratford’s King Lear received two Tony nominations
(Monday, May 10, 2004)
The Tony awards have just announced their list of nominations. Stratford’s King Lear received two Tony award nominations, Best Revival of a Play and Best Performance by Leading Actor - Christopher Plummer as King Lear.
For Best Revival of a Play, King Lear will be competing against Henry VI, and another Lincoln Centre Production; A Raisin in the Sun and Jumpers. For the Best Performance by a Leading Actor, Christopher will be competing against Kevin Kline in Henry IV; Jefferson Mays in I Am My Own Wife; Simon Russell Beale in Jumpers and Frank Langella in Match.
The Lincoln Centre’s King Lear ran from February 11, 2004 to April 18, 2004 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, and was a joint production between Lincoln Center Theatre and Stratford Festival of Canada. The play was based on the production staged at The Stratford Festival of Canada in the summer of 2002. Most of the cast and crew from the original Stratford production appeared in the Broadway production. The production team included Jonathan Miller as Director, Clare Mitchell as costume designer, Robert Thomson as lighting designer and Berthold Carrière composed the music.
Other Tony nominees that are familiar to Toronto theatre audiences include the Broadway musical hit Wicked which has received ten nominations, including The Best Musical. Wicked will be coming to Toronto in 2005 as part of Mirvish Production new season. The Bollywood musical Bombay Dreams, which opened on Broadway recently to mixed reviews, received only three nominations.
